Sounds like the evil humans may be after your blood soon!

Bacteria from the mouth of a Komodo dragon can cause poisoning in humans, but their blood might just help in the fight against superbugs (file pic).

Komodo dragon blood may help fight superbugs

Last updated 22:01, April 19 2017

It sounds like something out of Harry Potter: dragon's blood being used to fight superbugs.

But it's not that far-fetched.

Scientists from George Mason University in the US have isolated a compound found in Komodo Dragon blood that may provide a cure for antibiotic resistant superbugs, the New York Times reports.

Komodo dragons, found in Indonesia, grow up to 3.06 metres and weigh up to 90 kilograms. They are known to have more than 80 strains of bacteria in their mouths, including some that cause blood poisoning in humans.

The synthetic compound, dubbed DRGN-1  , showed promising results when tested on mice that were given skin wounds.

Led by Monique van Hoek, the team found DRGN-1 worked well against two bacterial strains - the "superbugs" Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Staphlyococcus aureus, also known as MRSA.

The two bacteria are hard to treat as they bond together to form colonies (or biofilms), making them much more resistant to antibiotics.

Van Hoek's team believes this could be a step forward in the hunt to find new antibiotics that are needed to fight multidrug-resistant pathogens.

The race to find new antibiotics has become urgent as more and more bacteria develop resistance to existing drugs.

In February, the World Health Organisation ranked the most dangerous superbugs, calling for new tools against them

The George Mason University study - published in the journal Biofilms and Microbiomes - suggests that the protein could potentially be developed into an antibiotic in the future.

Scientists are now hopeful the drug could be developed into an antibiotic for humans.

I won't do anything to help the humans. They won't get my blood, willingly.

Ok, I'll take back my previous post. If Doug ever got sick and needed some dragon blood to help him out, I could spare an ounce or two. :koolaid:
