We spent much of today in a couple of rinky-dink towns on the eastern plains. Of course, we would normally have absolutely no reason to go there especially when they're not even on I-70. But, today was different. I'm sure we have a few closeted train buffs in this place. I'm a huge rail fan and Union Pacific's #4014 Big Boy steam locomotive was rolling through the eastern plains today and made a couple of tourstops for rail fans to get some upclose pictures and see this beauty in action. The 4014 has been on a six-month tour of the southwestern and midwestern US ever since she was fully restored earlier this year. This is the only Big Boy locomotive that is actually in operation. The few remaining are in museums. She is in her final days of the tour and the schedule brings her to my hometown this week, but A) there are no public viewings except for when she is just rolling past crossings and B) on the days where she will be stopping for 30-45 minutes, I have to work. So today was the only day we could catch a really good glimpse.

Here are some pics in the towns of Kit Carson and Hugo:

I did get a few more with my wife and boys in them, but I'm not posting them because, well, this place.

The 4014 will be making her way from Limon, where she is on public display all day Sunday but not running, to Denver on Monday afternoon. I'm hoping to catch a glimpse as she passes through Aurora and then again on Tuesday when she makes her way through the northern suburbs back to Cheyenne where the tour officially comes to an end.

Nice PET. I particularly like your video from a few years back.

So it's actually still pulling freight. That's pretty cool.

I remember Rome :rome: calling Jimmy Johnson "Jimmuh's Big Boy" back in the day.

Rack the PET. I get to see plenty of trains hauling crude and coal so I'm not a huge rail fan but that's a freaking cool engine. Props to UP for resurrecting that beast.
